The Class:

Mary Pratt (1935–2018) was captivated by light, a passion she brilliantly captured in her masterful paintings. Her still-life works showcase the intricate play of light through everyday objects like jars of preserves, tinfoil, fruits, and plastic wrap. With meticulous care, she studied both real life and photography to observe and represent the behavior of light in her art.

In this 6-week class, Danielle will help participants find beauty indoors, as did Mary Pratt. Participants will appreciate how the textures of Pratt’s subjects seem to rush towards the viewer.  During this class, we will finish two projects using similar subjects as Pratt. Danielle’s class will be jam packed with hints, tips, and insights from her studio practices to painting techniques on achieving realism in watercolour.

For two hours each week, you will receive advice on the necessary steps for each. All participants will then paint along to apply the demonstrated techniques that can be reapplied to different photos of household items. The focus will be on interactive and individualized instruction, and you will be encouraged to ask questions throughout.

Between classes, you may send photos of either in-progress or completed paintings to Danielle for a private critique or advice to take your painting to the next stage.  Each week, you will have a bit of “homework”.

If you cannot attend any of the live classes, don’t worry.  All the presentations and recordings will be available to you after each class.  You will have lifetime access on YouTube.

You will be painting at least two (2) different still lifes, including one with jam jars, during this 6-week class. Participants are more than welcome to paint from their own photos.

Some painting experience is necessary.

You will need to download the ZOOM app. There is an online tutorial available at: support.zoom.us.
